What are some natural remedies for oily skin?

Question by Shivers: What are some natural remedies for oily skin?
Because it’s so humid where I live, my skin tends to become very oily very fast and I’m forever wiping the oil away, but the skin is still shiny. It’s that bad I can’t even wear any powder or other make-up because it just slides right off. How can I control the oiliness?
Don’t be silly Josh. I have showers everyday and scrub myself very well with soap and a loofa. It’s the climate I live in that causes the problems because it’s very hot and humid.

Exfoliation for Oily Skin

Article by Jesse Ryan

Skin exfoliation is essential for smoother skin. The process of eliminating the dead skin cells from the surface of skin is necessary for all skin types. There are different products for different skin types and hence you must identify your skin type first.

Oily skin is known to have a lot of clogged pores. The sebum in these pores would oxidise as soon as it is exposed to the air and forms blemishes as well as blackheads. In most cases, sebum is a kind of soft wax which is released from the pores. It forms a thin, invisible layer of protection on the skin. However, when it comes to oily skin, the amount of sebum produced is huge and it would eventually slough off in the pores. While maintaining oily skin, you must repeat the process of removing the sebum everyday, instead of trapping it inside. Overwashing your skin can turn out to be pretty harmful to oily skin. There are toners, masks, peels, brushes, sponges and washcloths available to exfoliate oily skin.

We have analysed some of the products for oily skin exfoliation, so as to help you make a better choice. Brushes and washcloths would often do a good job with skin exfoliation, but it is impossible to keep them clean at all times. Secondly, the masks can also be of great use, but they need to be used everyday. In addition, the masks would contain other chemicals and silicones, which eliminate the dead cells but also irritate the skin.

Skin exfoliating can make your skin look younger but also make you feel much younger on the inside. The secret to beautiful skin is to take the proper measures to ensure your using only the best products on your skin to preserve it and make it come alive.

Acne Skin Care for Oily Skin

Article by Karina Miranda

The summer can be quite punishing for people with particularly oily skin. Not only are the oil glands working overtime, acne breakouts can also occur more frequently on the face, neck, and back. With spaghetti-strapped tops and low-backed blouses being all the rage during summer, baring a little skin can be daunting for those who are oil- and acne-prone.

Causes of Oily Skin

The skin can get really shiny, sticky and oily because of the overproduction of sebum or oil by the oil glands. This happens due to a myriad of factors, chief among them your hormones. During puberty the skin tends to become more oily and acne-prone. This happens because at this time your body produces more hormones called androgens. These increase the oil production of your oil glands. As you age, your body tends to produce less androgens, and consequently, less oil and blemishes on your skin. Some people, however, are more predisposed to having oily skin even in adulthood, especially if they have parents with a similar condition. Hormonal changes during adulthood can also cause the appearance of more oil on your skin. This happens if you take steroids, get pregnant, are about to menstruate, or are experiencing menopause. Although some say that diet may also cause oily skin, no conclusive research or scientific consensus exists on the subject.

Skin Care for Oily Skin

The best way to manage oily skin and keep it blemish-free is to keep it clean free from acne-causing bacteria. Wash your face two to three times a day using hot water and soap – hot water can dissolve oil better than lukewarm or cold water. Be careful not to wash your face too much, as it can cause your skin to become dry and produce more oil to compensate. You also have to choose your cleanser wisely: use oil-based products that dissolve oil more effectively, and try using pure solutions with no artificial additives. You can also try antibacterial cleansers or lightly medicated soap. Steer away from heavy cleansing creams and alcohol-containing cleansers and toners. When cleansing the skin, massage it with your fingertips, being careful to not excessively scrub or rub soap into the skin as it can clog pores. You can use a mild astringent afterwards to clear pores – acetone is known to be good in dissolving oil. You can then use a natural oil-free moisturizer to keep the skin supple.

As a general rule, avoid harsh skin care products that can dry out your skin and may either encourage flakinesss or cause an even greater production of oil. Dehydrating products can also restrict oil flow through the pores, which can lead to blockages and breakouts. When using cosmetics, pick those that are specially designed for oily skin. Facial masks with bentonite, apple cider vinegar, tea tree oil, or egg whites are known to be effective in absorbing extra oil and reducing the appearance of blemishes.

A More Holistic Approach

Another approach to managing oily, acne-prone skin is by using natural skin treatments that work from the inside out to balance androgen production and regulate the skin’s oil. These include getting a more balanced diet, having enough sleep and exercise, and taking skin care vitamins that keep your skin clear and supple.

Oily Skincare – How to Care for Oily Skin

Article by Franchis Adam

Oily skin is shiny, thick and dull colored. Often a chronically oily skin has coarse pores and pimples and other embarrassing blemishes. It is prone to blackheads. In this type of skin, the oil producing sebaceous glands are overactive and produce more oil than is needed. The oil oozes and gives the skin a greasy shine. The pores are enlarged and the skin has a coarse look.. This is because if you know what the cause is, then you will know the best way to tackle the problem of actually dealing with it. While most methods will work in terms of actually controlling the symptom of oily skin, the larger condition needs to be treated in a way that has the cause of the problem in mind. With that said, here are some of the more frequent culprits in causing oily skin.

Hormone Levels

There are a number of different hormone levels that can affect whether or not you have oily skin and of course the hormone levels can be altered by various life events. Puberty can be an example of something that tends to lead to hormonal imbalances that can be a result of oily skin and at the other end of the spectrum as well menopause is another event that can create hormonal imbalances of a different kind that can also result in the same type of condition.

The essential requirement of treating oily skin is to remove excess surface sebum without total removal of the skin lipids. Severe degreasing treatment can lead to an apparent worsening of sebum secretion, which defeats the aim of the cleansing. A method of cleansing this type of skin is to wash with a solution of a very mild synthetic detergent (surfactant, see below) containing no oils, waxes or any other lipid agent that could aggravate the oily condition of the skin, sometimes combined with a toning lotion. This kind of product eliminates the oily residue and debris from the skin surface

Diet

There are a number of things in terms of the diet that you choose that can actually affect the level of fluids and oil secreted by the pores in your skin. If you have a diet that is low in protein and leafy green vegetables while at the same time being high in things like sugar, then through your lifestyle choice you are encouraging the type of oily secretions that are typically characterized as one of the main nuisances associated with an oily skin condition.

Treatment for oily skin

# White or pink clay masks gently cleanse oily skin of excess oil. The darker brown clay masks are stronger and more effective on very oily skins. Apply a clarifying face mask couple of times a week.

# Aromatherapy oils such as lemon, rosemary and cedarwood are said to be effective in treating oily skin. A few drops of any of these oils combined with lanolin can be massaged into the skin.

The everyday cucumber and tomato mashed and applied to the face is very good for the care of oily skin. One other simple thing that is often done in Indian homes is washing the face with buttermilk before exposure to the sun. Apply it allover the face and neck, wait for about 10 minutes and wash with warm water. Rose water mixed with ice water and mint juice with rose water is excellent for oily skin care. Always remember, any application should be left on for at least 10 minutes before being washed.

Make up for oily skin

Choose cosmetic and facial care products specifically designed for oily skin. Use oil-free moisturizers for a shine-free complexion. You can use an antiseptic day cream before applying makeup to oily skin. This will keep sebaceous secretions under control. Makeup for oily skin hinges on creating a matte effect.

You must use foundations that block out shine and non-pore clogging formula. Use concealer to hide blemishes and spots. Loose powder can keep you looking fresh all day long and absorb the excess oil too. Most women with oily skin cant do without this makeup item

What make-up is good for oily skin and what products are good for spots and oily skin ?

Question by LauraLouise: What make-up is good for oily skin and what products are good for spots and oily skin ?
I have very oily skin and have to re-apply my make-up every 2-3 hours as it gets so bad. As i apply it so often i break out in spots really badly so i would like to know any suggestions of good products to help oily skin and spots and also make-up which lasts longer than 2-3 hours.

Answer by Priscilla
Waterproof mascara is great!, i like Maybellines great lash range, it stays on all day. For foundation try Revlon Colourstay Mineral foundation, it works amazing and is great for oily/pimple prone skin, as mineral makeups don’t irritate the skin. It also stays on for a very long time, it’s supposed to last for up to 8 hours. Also try using a primer or moisturiser before applying foundation. This allows the foundation to spread on easily and stay on the skin for longer. For covering spots try a good concealer like Maybelline Pure concealer. It’s really light and won’t clog pores.

I hope i’ve helped :]

Makeup Tutorial: Everyday Face for Oily Skin

This is what I do on a daily basis. I have been doing this for the past few months and right after I got the Jane Aguaceuticals tinted moisturizer. Before that I just used a moisturizer with spf. People always ask me what foundation I use in my videos and the fact is I do NOT use liquid foundation everyday and I never will. It is not good for my skin. If you are oily and want some coverage from a foundation use a POWDER foundation. I used to use mineral makeup. There is no reason as to why I don’t use it anymore, I just like to change my routine now and then. Everything is mentioned in the video 🙂 Earrings + Ring: madamepie.ecrater.com I bought these items and I am a part of this lovely company I was sent Powder Brush from Mineral Magic www.mineralmagiccosmetics.com Finishing Powder (in sand) from Lumiere Cosmetics www.lumierecosmetics.com Thank you to Mineral Magic and Lumiere Cosmetics for sending me great quality products! I did not have to mention these in my video but I thought I should because I do use them.

Hi Jazzie,

I have had lots of problems with my skin in the past, so I completely understand how frustrated you must feel. This may seem a bit weird, but one product I have had a lot of success with is called Rose Hip Oil. Like I said, it seems weird, cos you would think that applying an oil such as this to already oily skin would make it worse, but because it is natural it seems to work really well. It’s a dry oil, so it doesn’t feel really gross or anything. It also helps with acne and redness and stuff like that. It does smell a bit like rose petals, so beware of that. It’s not a bad smell, but it is an unusual one.

Also, you mentioned that you have trouble throughout the day cos you can’t take your cleanser to school. Have you thought about buying those cleansing wipes that you can keep in your bag or locker so you can just use them to wipe your face when you need to? You don’t have to use any water, so they’re really quick and easy and they make your face feel so much fresher.

You don’t mention whether acne is a problem for you, but if is, the best advice I can give you is to go to your doctor. I was having problems a few years ago, and the doctor prescribed some tablets called Doxycycline and they truly were a godsend. For the first time in my life, I was actually complimented on how nice my skin was which was a really good feeling.

Hope I helped

I really need to find a good moisturizer for my skin. I have skin that is oily all over, not just in the T-zone area. I would really prefer an all natural moisturizer too. Does anyone know of any? All natural or not?
