I have read some similiar questions that dealt with women’s oily skin, but as a guy, I am not going to wear foundation. I used to have severe acne as a teenager, but now that I’m older, the acne has dropped considerably to more of a mild form. However, my skin is grossly oily and I have not been able to find something that controls it all day. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have been contemplating the Proactiv solution, but if something exists cheaper and just as effective, I would much rather go that route. Thanks in advance for all the help!

Have you gone to see a dermatologist? It might be that you need something stronger than those over-the-counter medicines/cleansers. If not, then just try different ones until you find the one that works best for you!

  1. Try something with salicylic acid. This is drying and may cause peeling….

    Ice Elements has been wonderful for my skin. You can get directly from them or the Home Shopping Network which is cheaper.

  2. I’m sorry that you have oily skin. I have too but there is nothing really to control it. However being a boy is better because since don’t wear make-up there are no times of make-up melting. Just blot your face with tissue every hourly to get rid of the grease. However I have a solution to get rid of the pimples and lessen the oil a bit.

    Try a gentle cleanser. One that is glycerin or sorbitol based will be good and it does not need to be expensive. Cetaphil and Neutrogena has some pretty good ones. Try Cetaphil® Gentle Skin Cleanser.

    Proactiv works for some people it clears up for a while but acne may come back. It is also very harsh on your skin and may dry it all up, definitely not for people with sensitive skin. My friend said it corroded and bleached her metal sink so if it can do that to the sink, think of what it is doing to your face. So Proactiv is a no no.

    Wash your face at least twice a day and everytime after you perspire. Since your skin is the oily kind, you do not need to apply any moisturizer, your skin oils are enough to keep it hydrated. If you really must apply a gentle light oil free one. Cetaphil® Daily Facial Moisturizer SPF 15 or Cetaphil® Moisturizing Lotion is quite good

    Apply pimple cream to the acne area. Try benzoyl peroxide low strength(2.5%) first. Don’t pick poke scrub or pop your pimples unless you want scars which are really ugly. Scrubbing cleansers or washes are also no-nos because it equals picking and poking and makes acne worse Treated pimples gently.

    Eat healthy. Make sure you drink plenty of water. Cut down on sugar and carb intake. Foods like chocolates, coffee, soda drinks, bread, rice potatoes or anything starchy and sugary are no-nos. Cut down on oily and fried foods also. Go for grilled, steamed or baked food. Make sure you eat lots of fruits and vegatables. Ensure that your diet is rich in vitamin A, C, E and Omega-3 which are important for the skin.

    If acne is severe and nothing helps, it is time to see a dermatologist. The pills and medications do work but you may have to take them long term to suppress the acne as it is not a cure and acne is a chronic disease. However the pills are not miracles and you won’t see results in 2-3 days. It normally takes about 2 weeks to see the difference. However not all dermatologists prescribe pills unless your acne is really bad. The pills will include antibiotics, accutane. It your acne isn’t that bad, dermatologists will prescribe topical creams first. If you are really going to a dermatologist, I suggest asking about a product known as Retin-A that treats acne and acne marks and heals the scars.

    Lemon Scrub

    Salt is one of the best antibacterial ingredients ever, and it is slightly abrasive. Lemon juice exfoliates as it cleans.

    INGREDIENTS
    ¼ cup sea salt
    Enough lemon juice to make a paste

    Combine ingredients in a bowl. Dab gently on your face with fingertips or a cotton ball, then massage into your skin, being careful to avoid your eyes. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.

    Helpful Hints:
    If you have very delicate or sensitive skin, omit the salt and use the lemon juice diluted half and half with water. Pat gently onto skin, then rinse thoroughly.

    Body Facial Scrub

    Ingredients:
    1/4 C rolled oats
    1/4 C powdered milk (buttermilk or goats milk works great)
    1 Tbsp table or sea salt
    Extras added to above:
    1Tbsp cornmeal (for extra exfoliation)
    1Tbsp rose petal powder
    1tsp neem powder (for problem skin)

    Instructions:
    Put all ingredients in food processor and process until fine. Add fragrance/essential oils drop by drop while processing. To Use: place 1 – 2 Tbsp of mixture in palm and wet (water/hydrosol/floral water) until paste-like. Gently, massage into skin and rinse well. Note: I use this on my skin daily and modify as needed. Other additives could be: powdered lemon or orange peel, powdered lavender buds, chamomile, calendula etc.

    Banana Moon Facial Mask

    INGREDIENTS
    1 banana, just ripe
    1 tablespoon honey
    1 egg yolk
    1 teaspoon wheat germ oil
    1 tablespoon finely powdered oats
    1 teaspoon lemon juice (optional, if mask will not be used immediately)
    1 drop each rose and Melissa essential oils (optional)
    1. Peel and mash banana. Add honey, egg yolk, wheat germ oil, oats, and lemon juice, if used, and mash further to form a smooth, creamy paste.
    2. If mask is too thick, add a bit of distilled water, and stir until smooth.
    3. Add essential oils last, and stir to mix well.
    4. To use, apply to clean face and neck, avoiding eye and mouth areas. Rest for 10 minutes, or longer if your skin is very dry. Rinse with warm water, and follow with toner and moisturizer, if desired. Use mask within a few hours of making.

    Brown Sugar Facial Scrub

    The sweet almond oil and calendula petals can be found in health food stores.

    2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
    1 tablespoon ground oatmeal

    Mix all together and put in jar with tight lid.

    batch of facial scrub
    5 min 5 min prep

    1 cup rose petals
    1 cup lavender flowers
    1 cup whole oatmeal
    1/2 cup chopped almonds
    3-5 drops glycerine (optional)
    3-5 drops rose water (optional)

    Blend all in a blender, grinder, food processor.
    Apply to face.
    Leave on for 5-10 minutes.
    Rinse face.
