Question by Kelvin K: I have a problem with pimples and oily skin and not sure what I am doing is helping. Advise me please.?
I am a 20 old Kenyan black male. I really have oily skin and pimples. I wash my face in the morning with Neem soap and also in the evening. I do not apply anything on my body. I do not want to apply anything at all. I have done this for two months and still I have pimples. What am I doing wrong?what should I do?

  1. I’m a 40something, white woman but I think acne is acne and many of the same things apply, black or white, man or woman. I’ve never had acne on my body but again, acne is acne.

What works best for you will depend how sensitive your skin is. I have to be very careful about any products that are harsh or drying. Check the ingredient list and if alcohol is there, especially in the first 2-3 listed, I wouldn’t use it.

Some will tell you that if you have oily skin you want to dry it out but that’s not really true. If your skin is oily it means that when your oil glands kick into gear they work overtime so if you keep drying out your skin, it triggers your oil glands to go to work and they produce to much oil, again and again. It’s best to keep your skin clean but well hydrated to keep your oil glands quiet.

This means a mild cleanser and finding a good moisturizer. I’ve never heard of Neem soap but if you’re in the US, I suggest Aveeno products. I’ve got my husband using them, from the shaving products on down to the face cleansers and lotions. He doesn’t have acne but he does have very sensitive skin.

Another thing I’ve found helps a lot is Tea Tree Oil, a natural antibacterial product. It is smelly and has some powerful fumes. I use the pure oil but you can buy it in a mixture with other natural ingredients. I rub it on my skin at night after I’ve washed my face. It helps kill bacteria and keep acne from spreading. Look for it at health product stores.
